Baking outside of the box

I have always loved a classic dessert with a twist. If you can figure out how to make a delicious dessert and learn how to be more creative with it in the future, it can be a game changer.

Sometimes it is as simple as adding a different flavor of chocolate chips to your cookies or if can be as complicated as subbing out ingredients and seeing how things will come together, or not.

I never really went out of my comfort zone as a baker, until I was pushed into it when I was in Pastry school or having to come up with a dessert on the fly for a party, event etc. Some would say it is “baking outside of the box”.

Being creative for me used to mean always finding a new recipe, however, if you can find a recipe you love and want to try something new out, I always encourage you to explore. I had a class in pastry school called “Baking technology” where we would make a recipe and the sub out an ingredient and see what kind of reaction would happen. We would check the taste, the texture and discuss them together in class. My favorites were brownie day and ice cream day.

How do you get started with the experimenting??? well, in my classes, I will not only show you recipes that you can make as the recipe reads, but I will also guide you into how you can be more creative, if you choose.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, I have spent the last 15 years making mistakes that have not only given me more confidence in baking, but more confidence in general. Baking for me allows me to focus my energy, it also help me control my ADD.

Baking should be fun and if it is not feeling fun for you on a particular day, try again another day. The ingredients and the oven will patiently wait for you until you are ready.

I am always here to guide you as much as you need it. I have been right where you are and even after 15 years, I never made a pie until Pastry School when I was 29 and had never made anything with yeast until school either.

I am still always learning and practicing my patience in the kitchen. The rewards can be super sweet and a great way to release some stress.

I would love to see you in a class soon. I have added some classic classes with a twist to my schedule and am always available for private events if you are more comfortable in a smaller group setting.
